EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., Feb. 17, 2025 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The newly built wastewater treatment plant in Greenfield, Indiana, was commissioned in October 2024 and now provides the community with needed additional wastewater treatment capacity. PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline concrete waterproofing admixture, was used to protect the concrete components from the aggressive environment due to the effluent – and help maximize the service life of the new plant.

The project engineers specified a robust concrete waterproofing solution for the concrete structures exposed to the effluent to ensure impermeability and enhanced durability.

Once upon a time, Greenfield, Indiana, was a stop on the Panhandle Route (PCC&StL) railway line that connected Pittsburgh to Chicago and St. Louis. Today, this town of about 24,000 people is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area in central Indiana and offers a balance between small town life and easy access to the big city of Indianapolis only 20 minutes away.

Originally constructed in the 1960s, Greenfield's previous wastewater treatment plant had seen a number of repairs and improvements throughout the past 25 years. This facility comprised a main activated sludge wastewater treatment system with two Actiflo high rate settling processes. However, with a four-million gallon per day (MGD) capacity, it was unable to keep up with growing demand for wastewater treatment.

"In addition, Commonwealth Engineers, a civil engineering and consulting services firm, assessed the plant's structural condition and treatment processes as unsustainable due to the aeration system, which needed a major upgrade, as well as a thorough revision of the whole facility," explains Richard Farmer, Eastern Region Sales Manager for Penetron USA.

Subsequently, the option of constructing a wholly new wastewater treatment facility was chosen. This plant includes: a raw sewage lift station, valve vault, headworks with screening, grit, and odor control equipment, sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treatment system with blowers, mixers, and decanters, UV disinfection system, low-profile cascade aeration system, non-potable water system, sludge processing system (including a sludge holding tank, blowers, mixers, and decanters, sludge pumps, centrifuge dewatering, polymer feed, and conveyor system), chemical feed system for phosphorus removal, septage receiving station, and vac truck screenings drying beds.

"The project engineers specified a robust concrete waterproofing solution for the concrete structures exposed to the effluent to ensure impermeability and enhanced durability," adds Richard Farmer.

Shelby Materials, a regional ready-mix concrete supplier and long-time Penetron partner, added PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, to about 11,000 yds3 of concrete mix. This mix met the specifications to effectively waterproof and protect the new concrete structures – the mat foundation, holding tanks, structural wall footings, retaining walls, elevated tank slabs, columns, beams, and walls.

"The Greenfield wastewater treatment plant also features the largest SBR in the state of Indiana. SBRs are wastewater treatment systems that use microorganisms to treat wastewater in batches in a single tank," says Richard Farmer. "With a peak treatment capacity at around 10 million gallons/day (MGD), it can accommodate the growing demand for treatment capacity as well as wet weather events."
